Continuing detection in wide scatter of countries
28/11/07
A second turkey farm in Suffolk England has been confirmed as being infected with the H5N1 strain. A sick egret found in Hong Kong last week has tested positive. Hong Kong has occasionally found avian influenza in wild birds but hasn't suffered a major outbreak of the disease lately. The official Saudi Press Agency has published a statement saying that all birds at a farm at al-Kharj, 150 km (94 miles) south of Riyadh were culled on Thursday after the H5N1 strain was found there. It gave no more details. Officials in Burma say a new outbreak of bird flu has been detected among chickens at a farm in Kentung township in eastern Shan state near the Chinese border. A small, contained outbreak in South Korea has been shown to be due to the low pathogenic H7N8 strain. These reports are probably an indication of heightened awareness and prompt diagnosis rather than suggesting a wider endemic.
New infection confirmed in single English farm
19/11/07
H5N1 infection has been confirmed in turkeys on one farm in Suffolk, England but specimens from a suspected second farm have so far tested negative. Extensive precautionary culling has taken place to contain the outbreak the origin of which is still uncertain. The strain of the virus is very similar to that detected in Germany, France and the Czech Republic during the summer
