ENDEMIC countries Indonesia and Egypt will notify officially only 6 monthly. Unofficial notifications are here included as noted.
The following countries are considered low-mild risk due to localised transmission of bird to human disease:
Destination Status
Azerbaijan 8 Cases with 5 deaths in 2006. Quarantine lifted 8 April 2006.
Bangladesh First human case confirmed retrospectively - child taken ill in January and has recovered. First poultry cases reported in March 2007 and further outbreaks occurred through April and May controlled until early 2008 when there has been extensive infections totalling 285 outbreaks. Control measures partially effective but there are still unresolved areas
Cambodia

6 cases, all fatal in 2004. No reports until April 2007 when a 7th fatal case occurred in Kampong Cham province.

China

Infections occurring through 2005 and 2006.  New human cases in December 06, February and May 2007. Poultry infected in Tibet . Multiple reports throughout China of infection in wild birds latest outbreaks in Tibet , western Xinjiang and southern Guizhou and in poultry in Gaungzhou. A new fatal human case was confirmed in Jiangsu province December 2; this patient's father became infected by direct contact and has recovered.. Another fatal human case was , recorded in Guandong province in February. Revised WHO figures show a total of 30 cases with 20 deaths. Outbreak in ducks reported in June in Guangdong, reported resolved in July.

Egypt

Total of 1052 outbreaks listed since February 2006 of which many are currently still unresolved. Cases have largely involved domestic and backyard poultry and the disease as been declared ENDEMIC for the country therefore only 6-monthly reports will be made. Human cases 5 with 22 deaths.

Indonesia

Infections occurring since 2005 and new cases regularly reported. As at 30th June there were 137 human cases of whom 112 have died. All provinces must be considered potentially infected. Disease ENDEMIC. Only 6-monthly reports will be made. Suspected cases in Malang West Java.

Iraq 3 confirmed human cases and 2 deaths in 2006. No reports in poultry until 2 March 2008 when infected birds found in Basra.
Laos

Infection confirmed retrospectively in August 2006. First two human cases notified in February 2007, both fatal. Continuing outbreaks reported but no further human cases.

Myanmar

Declared free wef 4 September 2006 but new outbreak reported near Yangon February 2007 subsequently in south-eastern area, the Bago division and in Kentung in Eastern Shan state in November. One human case with recovery reported in Kengtung December 17 2007. No outbreaks in 2008.

Nigeria

Current in poultry and ornamental birds. New outbreak northern area January 2007 with one fatal human case. No new human infections reported but 4 scattered outbreaks in domestic birds during July 2008. Genetically new strain found in outbreaks in Katsina and Kano reported 11 August 2008.

Pakistan

First cases in poultry in April 2006. Further outbreaks in outbreaks in Rawalpindi , Sindh, the North western Province andl as Islamabad Capital Territory in 2007. For the first time in December human cases were suspected. and subsequently proven in 3 patients with one fatality.The other two cases were infected while caring for the patient who died. There were no further cases. New poultry outbreaks in Sindh early in March and NW province in June.

Thailand

Transmission in birds over two years, 25 human cases with 17 deaths. One suspected person to person case..

Two reports over 2007 with outbreaks controlled but new outbreaks in Phitchit and Nakhon Sawan January 2008. No new human cases.
Turkey

12 cases resulting in 4 confirmed deaths in 2006. New infections in backyard poultry reported throughout 2007 in Batman province and again near Zonguldak in January 2008 and in Edirne in March. Reported resolved 14 April

Vietnam

Waves of infections in birds occurring since 2004. New cases in Mekong Delta provinces late December 2006 and early January 2007. Since May 2007 there have been outbreaks in most provinces.. In May 2008 there were 3 infected areas, namely in the northern Son La province, southern Vinh Long province, and southern Can Tho city

First new human case since November 2005 reported 20 May 2007 in the northern Vinh Phuc province. Human cases 106 with 52 deaths.

The following countries are considered negligible-low risk due to no evidence of bird to human disease but where avian influenza has been identified:

Albania Latest reports in chickens August 2006. But restriction lifted 1st December 2006
Austria Wild Swans only
Benin

First reports 28 January 2008 of outbreaks in December 2007 amongst chickens, ducks and turkeys in Adjara. Outbreak reported as resolved. Virus detected in live chickens bought at Lokassa market 29 July 2008.

Bulgaria Mute Swans and mallard ducks.

Czech Republic Swans in Southern Bohemia. Situation considered resolved wef 15 June 2006 but turkeys found infected 21 June 2007 and broilers also confirmed 29 June plus 3 small outbreaks in poultry farms in July.
France Wild Birds and farm Turkeys. Declared free wef 18 June 2006 but ducks and swans found infected in the Moselle prefecture in August 2007.
Georgia Wild birds only
Ghana First report 14 April involving intensively raised poultry in Temla. Three outbreaks recorded here and a further one in Sunyani district.
Germany Wild birds and farm turkeys. Protection measures lifted 3 September 2006 but sporadic cases detected in wild birds and domestic backyard flocks in July, August and December 2007.
Greece Wild Birds only
Hong Kong New reports only in wild birds 2007 including bird in theme park resulting in closure in January
Hungary Mute swans at first but later found in geese and poultry. Recurrence in geese January 2007 but no further outbreaks recorded.
India Backyard and commercial poultry. Declared free wef 11 August 2006 but sporadic outbreaks since, now confined to West Bengal and Tripura. As yet not fully under control.
Iran Swans only initially but infection detected in backyard poultry during December 2008 Mazandaran.
Israel Turkeys and broiler chickens. Free wef 1 August 2006 until December 28 2007 when dead birds found in Binyamina.Reported as resolved in January ..
Italy Wild Birds only
Japan New outbreak December 2006 Kyushu continuing into January. As of late April 10 outbreaks still unresolved. Swans affected Lake towada in northern Honshu.
Kazakhstan Chicken and Geese
Korea (South, North)

South - New outbreak in North Colla province in late November 2006 with further reports early in 2007. New outbreak confirmed in North Jeolla province April 2nd 2008. Further outbreaks in southwest and in Seoul during May but country declared free wef 17 August.

North NOT H5N1
Kuwait

Scattered cases in domestic poultry in February and March 2007. 20 outbreaks in various areas continuing through April 2007 but none since.

Malaysia Cases in poultry. First outbreak since March 2006 in Selangor state June 2007. Reported as resolve in September.

Niger Traditionally reared poultry
Palestine Authority Chickens and ducks in Gaza. Declared free wef 19 July 2006
Poland Wild Swans only until turkeys found infected end November Outbreak resolved wef 31 January.
Romania Chickens and ducks backyard farms. No reports from May 2006 till November 29 2007 when backyard poultry cases found infected in Tulcea near the Black Sea.
Russia Widespread in poultry in Siberian region August 06. Then in Krasnodar regions January and Moscow region February 2007with further reports since including Kaluzhskaya, Adygeya and Rostov. Some outbreaks unresolved but no new reports 2008.
Saudi Arabia Infection in falcon December 2006. New notification of outbreak in unspecified birds in a private house in Al Gammah March 2007 quickly controlled. New cases in November and in January but outbreaks reported resolved wef 11 May 2008.
Slovak Republic Wild birds only during 2006 and again in February 2007
Slovenia Wild birds only
Spain First notification July 2006. Wild bird only
Sudan Poutry outbreak 1 April 06. Backyard Poultry systems
Switzerland Wild birds only with latest report being 31st March 2008
Togo Chickens infected probably from shipment from Ghana. Confirmed infection in Sigbehoue near Lome on 23 June 2007 and three other areas east of the capital found infected in August.
Ukraine Poultry farms in Crimea and northern Ukraine , birds in Odessa zoo. Report dated 22 September 2006 all restrictions lifted but new cases in Crimea involving chickens reported from January 2008 with three areas still involved. Country declared free wef July 2008.
UK First confirmed outbreak reported in Suffolk January 2007 subsequently controlled. New outbreak in two Suffolk farms in early November 2007 involving turkeys subsequently controlled. Wild swans and a goose found dead in Dorset this year. All outbreaks resolved.
